Trailer Training in Durham

Are you pulling above your weight?

The law has changed about the trailer weight you are allowed to pull if you simply hold a standard licence. If you’re towing (or planning to tow) a box trailer, caravan or horse box, do you know whether the change affects you? Be aware that if you exceed the new limit you may no longer be covered by your insurance and you could suffer a driving license penalty.

You may well need a B+E licence, which means taking a B+E driving test with a DVSA examiner. With the expert help of the high quality, highly effective trailer training in Durham from EasyPass Driving School you can be sure of pulling your weight on the safe side of the law.

Be clear and be safe

If you passed your driving test before 1997 your category A licence permits you to go on the road with a car-plus-trailer unit weighing up to 7.5 tons (8,250kg). But if you passed your test after January 1st 1997, the combined weight of car and loaded trailer should not be more that 3.5 tons (3,500kg). That’s roughly half of what the law permitted before.

With an ordinary license you’re probably safe to be pulling a loaded trailer of the small kind available from a motor accessories store or a trailer tent. But if you’re going to tow a good sized box trailer, a caravan or horse box you should get yourself a B+E license with the expert help of trailer training in Durham with EasyPass.

To begin the DVSA car and trailer test, you’ll have an eyesight check and be asked questions about basic safety checks Then comes the practical part comprising:

  • reversing vehicle and trailer into a restricted space and stopping at a certain point
  • driving in various road types and conditions as directed by the examiner.
  • pulling over at the roadside, pulling out from behind a parked vehicle and a hill start
  • independent driving following road signs
  • uncoupling and recoupling vehicle and trailer and parking beside the trailer

The EasyPass Difference

Even if you’re in your 40’s, 50’s or 60’s with a pre-1997 driving license and thinking about having a big trailer or caravan, you might still feel that these are techniques well worth mastering. We think you’d be right.

It takes a special skill to pull a bulky weight along the highway, and specialist instructors to train you. At EasyPass we’re proud to say we’re one of only general driving schools to have instructors with this kind of experience providing trailer training in Durham, Gateshead, Sunderland, Newcastle, South Tyneside and North Tyneside. The test centres for trailer towing are in Gosforth and Darlington, and we offer lesson routes in those localities.

Like all of our tuition team they are Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Approved Driving Instructors and selected and trained to be calm, courteous, considerate, and good communicators. All are passionate for you to pass.

The Trailer Training course usually begins with a trailer assessment lesson to gauge how much training you are likely to need to pull a large trailer with competence and confidence. We can then recommend a five, ten or 15 hour course, all of which include a test.
